A Nightmare on Elm street presents the lives and dreams of the teens which signifies the boundaries between dreams and Reality. Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp) and her other friends, Tina Gray (Amanda Wyss), Rod Lane (Jsu Garcia) and Glen Lantz (Johnny Depp) are having nightmares about a terrifying figure who wears a glove with razor-sharp “finger knives”. They actually dreamt of a clawed killer named as Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund). Nancy finds that the kids are dying and she must stay awake to survive. Nancy plans to present him out into the real world by discovering the secret about the dream killer and his connection with the kids of Elm Street.
A nightmare on Elm street is a horror movie with awesome story line. The film has the initial scene showing Tina Gray (Amanda Wyss) dreams of walking through a boiler room dressed in a nightgown. As she is followed and attack by a clawed killer she awakens from the nightmare because her mother figures out four mysterious slits in her gown.
Tina shares her dream with Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp) and her boyfriend Glen Lantz (Johnny Depp) but they console her. Nancy and Glen stays with Tina when her mother goes out of town. During their sleepover Tina’s boyfriend Rod Lane (Jsu Garcia) interrupts to have sex after arguing. Later when she falls asleep she again sees the man and runs. Rod gets awakened by Tina’s thrashing and witnesses her for being seriously hit by an unseen force. Suddenly Rod flees from there as Nancy and Glen comes there. They unknowingly blames Rod. Soon Nancy informs her father Lieutenant Don Thompson (John Saxon), about Tina’s death.
The very next day Nancy falls asleep at school in the class and dreamt of a same man, calls himself Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund). He chases her in the boiler room where she burns her arm on a pipe. Suddenly she awakens in the middle of class and excuses herself, but she sees the burn mark on her arm. At the same time Rod states to Nancy that he is innocent. Nancy falls asleep in the bathtub of her home and nearly gets drowned by Freddy. Soon Nancy and Rod meets and Rod tells what happened to Tina, Nancy suspects that Freddy is only one who is responsible for Tina’s death.
Again Nancy falls asleep but Glen watch over as she sleeps. She dreamt of Freddy who is preparing to murder Rod, Freddy flip his attention on her. Nancy wakes up and runs as her alarm clock goes off. At jail Glen and Nancy finds that Rod has been hanged in his cell by his own bed sheet in an apartment as a suicide. Nancy describes about her dream to Rod’s parents at his funeral, they get worried about the situation. Nancy’s mother Marge Thompson (Ronee Blakley) takes her to a dream clinic as she describes about the dream. Again she dreamt of Freddy attacking her and she grabs Freddy’s hat, soon the staff wake her up. Although she gets a cut in her arm she cleverly has Freddy’s hat with her.
Marge returns home and drinks heavily where she tells Nancy that Freddy was a child killer who was released on a technicality. The parents in the neighborhood burned him alive in a form of vigilante justice. Nancy convinces Glen to help her after she realizes that Freddy wants revenge. She plots to set up booby traps in her home and take Freddy into the real world. But Glen’s parents are too worried and not satisfied with the friendship of Glen and Nancy and soon they do not allow them to meet. Freddy kills Glen as he falls asleep at their appointed time. Now Nancy alone takes her drunken mother to the bed and tries to persuade her father to break into the house within twenty minutes. As she sleeps she finds Freddy at the last second and takes him out of the dream but in the real world Nancy runs from Freddy. Freddy trips on a booby traps. Nancy locks Freddy in the basement and lights him on a fire, rushes to asks help. As the police arrives they notices that Freddy has escaped the basement. Police notices a still-burning Freddy overwhelming in Marge’s bedroom. Freddy vanishes and Marge becomes nothing but becomes a charred corpse and the body disappears into the bed as Don puts out the fire because of which Nancy again believes that she is still not out of danger. Lt. Thompson gets shocked due to the supernatural manifestation whereas Nancy looks resolute. Soon Freddy appears rising up from the bed as he finds Nancy alone. Nancy turns her back and remembers what Glen told her and curses Freddy. Freddy vanishes into a thin air, despite of his effort to grab her, her fearless move renders him powerless.
Now, the scene twisted and Nancy is shown leaving her bedroom and finds herself outside dresses for school. Marge promises Nancy that she is going to quit drinking while Nancy is off to school. As Freddy once again attacks Nancy he realizes that he is powered by his victim’s fear reducing him to emptiness. Nancy steps outside into a bright morning, finds all her friends and mother are still alive. She gets ready for school and gets into Glens car with Rod and Tina as well. Unfortunately, the top comes down and locks them inside. Marge is grabbed via the front window of the car when the car is driven uncontrollably down the street. Later this incident result to the apparent death of Marge.

The film is well written and well played horror movie. The boundaries between the real life and dream has been represented. However the movie A Nightmare on Elm Street holds the satisfying mixture of horror, thriller and fantasy with perfect story line.
